Album Review – Lord Cut-Glass by Lord Cut-Glass

Lord Cut-Glass by Lord Cut-Glass

This self-titled album is the debut from former Delgados vocalist Alun Woodward. With Emma Pollock having already began releasing good solo material it is pleasing to see Woodward now do the same.

The album is pretty quirky and shares some characteristics with Malcolm Middleton’s solo ventures. Creative use of instrumentation adds well to the straightforward delivery of Woodward’s vocals. The avant garde nature of the album is backed up by the story of how Woodward chose his moniker following a bout of scarlet fever:

“I read Under Milk Wood in a feverish state and decided I’d call myself after one of the characters.”

The album as a whole is a pleasurable listening experience. I’d single out tracks Holy Fuck, apparently about a person who never realised how great they were, I Am A Great Example To The Dogs, Picasso (featuring Emma Pollock on backing vocals) and Big Time Teddy, about people getting delusions of grandeur.

7/10 from me. I look forward to seeing how Woodward develops from here.
